How to Sideload Third-Party Apps on Your Meta Quest VR Headset

Want to install third-party apps on your Oculus Quest? It’s surprisingly simple—just follow this step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Install SideQuest

First, grab SideQuest (if you already have it installed, you can skip this step).
Download it here: [Click here to download]
Note: Windows users should be on Windows 8 or higher; Windows 7 may run into compatibility issues. The installation process is standard, just like any other program. Once finished, you’ll see the SideQuest icon on your desktop.

Step 2: Register as an Oculus Developer

To sideload apps onto your Quest, you need to be a registered “Developer.” Don’t worry, it’s completely free. Head over to the Oculus Developer Dashboard, log in with your account, and click “Create New Organization” in the top right. Choose a name for your organization, check the “I understand” box, and submit. If the name is already taken, just pick something unique.

Step 3: Install ADB Drivers (Windows Only)

If you’re on Mac or Linux, you can skip this. Windows users, grab the latest drivers from the official Oculus developer site: https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/package/oculus-adb-drivers/. Once downloaded, extract the ZIP file, right-click the “android_winusb.inf” file, and select “Install.” Again, make sure you are on Windows 8 or later.

Step 4: Enable Developer Mode

If the first three steps are squared away, open the Meta Quest app on your smartphone or tablet. Go to the “Devices” tab, select your Quest headset, and tap “Headset Settings.” Look for “Developer Mode” in the list and toggle it on. A quick reboot of your headset is recommended to finalize the change.

Step 5: Connect via USB and Authorize Debugging

Connect your Quest to your PC using a USB cable. When you put on the headset, you should see an “Allow USB Debugging” prompt. Make sure to check “Always allow from this computer” to save yourself the hassle of repeating this step every time you plug in.

Step 6: Sideloading Apps

You’re now ready to sideload! You can install apps directly through the SideQuest interface or drag-and-drop an APK file onto the SideQuest icon in the top-left corner. Keep in mind that third-party apps usually won’t appear in your main library. Instead, check the “Unknown Sources” section to launch them. I highly recommend installing a custom app launcher; it makes finding and managing your sideloaded content much easier. You’ll find the launcher under the same “Unknown Sources” tab once installed.

Pro Tip: Most apps installed via SideQuest are found under the “Unknown Sources” list in your VR library.
